The modern Russian market of PET originates from commissioning of the first domestic plants producing PET-preform in impetuous 90es. For the past 10-15 years PET market at the territory of CIS passed the important steps of development. The total consumption of PET at the territory of former USSR leveled up to 700 thousand tons per year and is still going to increase. Nowadays there are domestic companies, which not only keep the leading position at initial market but also expand their influence to the neighboring regions. The major consumer of the polymer in CIS is packaging industry. The other important sector consuming polyesters is the light industry. But the last is still in crisis situation and has the weak influence on the PET processing output.

The increasing demand for PET goods stimulates both independent companies and major processors of PET to create the inhouse feedstock supply, the PET chips production. It should be noted that in 2003 the initial market was 100% supplied by import production due to the absence of domestic producers of this kind of production. Though at the present time there are two plants functioning with total capacity of more than 140 thousand tons per year. In the nearest couple of years the additional facilities would be commissioned. The capacity of the new plant is amounted to 200 thousand tons of the polymer per year. Moreover, the development of domestic PET production would continue. And some new projects scheduled to be performed till 2010-2012 were announced.

The "PET" conference, annually organized by CREON, becomes the immutable place for the meeting of almost all market participants: suppliers and customers of PET goods (perform, films and fibers); polyethylene terephtalate producers and traders; supplies of equipment for polymer production and processing, and other stakeholders. Polyethylene was and is going to be the most important polymer, taking the first place for production output and demand among all large commodity plastics. The world capacity of polyethylene production increased up to 70 million tons per year, the polyethylene output in 2005 amounted to 65 million per year. At the same time the world demand increase by 5% per year, and Asian region is going to become the world center of polyethylene market growth. At the world scene Russian and CIS producers do not play the important role now. However, the rapid increase of polyethylene production, domestic hydrocarbon raw material supply and plans of first-rate vertically-integrated companies for polyolefin branch development can result in substantial increase of CIS countries role at the world arena within 5-10 years.

Within the past few years the dynamic growth of polyethylene production volumes was registered in Russia. This is the result of the increase of demand for this production from polyethylene processing enterprises, increasing polymer and metallic-polymer tubes production, production of films, packaging materials, etc.

Nevertheless, in spite of production growth, the polyethylene demand exceeds the supply at the Russian market. The current domestic output of polyethylene is not enough, that can be confirmed by export decrease and import increase for this product. In 2005 Russian producers of polyethylene decreased export by more than 40 per cent in comparison with the same values of 2003, down to 160,8 thousand tons. In 2005 polyethylene import reached 196,6 thousand tons that is 1,9 times more than 2002. The main import thread is formed by the polyethylene grades, not produced in Russia which are used for the production of high-tech goods.
